- Organic compounds are covalent in nature.
- They are non-polar substances and are insoluble in polar solvents.
- They have low melting and boiling points.
- They are highly flammable.
- Their reactions are relatively slow compared to inorganic chemical reactions
Variety of Organic Compounds
There are varieties of organic compounds. The presence of numerous organic compounds is due to the following properties of carbon.
- The ability of carbon atom to catenate. Catenation of carbon atoms means for carbon atoms to combine with one another to form straight chains, branched chains or ring compounds containing many compounds.
2. The ease with which carbon combines with hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and halogens.
3. The ability of carbon to form single, double or triple bonds.
4. The bond energy of carbon single bond is high. Therefore, organic compounds with carbon-carbon single bond are very stable and the energy needed to break one the bond is high.
