The term ‘organic’ means living things or things gotten from living things. Therefore, organic chemistry means the chemistry of living things (plants and animal and their chemical products) in a lay man’s knowledge. Organic chemistry is the study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds. Most organic compounds contain carbon and hydrogen, but they may also include any number of other elements (e.g., nitrogen, oxygen, halogens, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur). Carbon is the building block of all organic compounds.
