About This Course

The book provides the fundamental concepts and principle in chemistry for students. The arrangement and scope of the topics are in accordance with the National Curriculum in Chemistry, as well as the WAEC examination syllabus in Chemistry. Inevitably, teachers will find the book as a useful guide in their day-to-day lessons.

In general, a textbook of elementary students serves two main purposes: It is meant to supplement teaching. It is also a source of study. It may be said truly that many textbooks do not fulfill the later purpose, because of the neglect of that broad generalization which is common alike to elementary and advanced work. For the young students, such generalization presents considerable difficulty, but rightly required in answering questions. The author has therefore endeavored to keep this in mind, and it has largely determined the arrangement of the book.

The objective of this text is therefore to present in a concise manner, a comprehensive survey of the subject to meet the requirements of students taking chemistry in the Senior Secondary School of the new education system (9-3-4), University Matriculation Examination (UME) and Polytechnic/College of Education (PCE).

In addition, worked examples are included to make teaching as well as learning easier. Also, each chapter ends with assignment. The latter is for purpose of making the students test their understanding of the subject matter.

This book is recommended also to students of schools of Basic Studies, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education. Suggestions/comments from teachers and user on how the book might be improved will be welcomed.
