Meaning of Agriculture

From: Agricultural Science JS 1

The term “agriculture” is derived from two Latin words: ager meaning field, and cultura meaning cultivation. Literally, agriculture means field cultivation.

Agriculture can be defined as the art and science which deals with the growing of crops and rearing of animals for man’s use.

Agriculture is simply the art and science of growing crops and rearing animals to provide food, clothing, and other useful materials for people.

Think of it as two main jobs:

  1. Crop Production: Planting things like maize, yams, or vegetables.
  2. Livestock Production: Raising animals like chickens, cows, or goats.

It also includes how we process these things (like turning cassava into garri) and how we sell them to make money.
