The Nigerian Secondary School Curriculum Explained: JSS1 to SS3
Understanding the Nigerian Secondary School System
The Nigerian secondary school education spans six years, divided into two stages: Junior Secondary School (JSS 1-3) and Senior Secondary School (SS 1-3). The curriculum is designed by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and implemented by schools across the country.
Junior Secondary School (JSS 1-3)
JSS focuses on building a broad foundation. Students study a wide range of compulsory subjects:
- Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Civic Education, Basic Science, Basic Technology
- Pre-vocational Subjects: Agriculture, Home Economics, Business Studies, Computer Studies
- Humanities: Social Studies, Christian/Islamic Religious Studies, French (optional)
- Creative Arts: Fine Arts, Music, Physical Education
At the end of JSS3, students take the Junior WAEC (Basic Education Certificate Examination - BECE). Performance in this exam, along with interest and aptitude, helps determine their SS1 subject combination.
Senior Secondary School (SS 1-3)
In SSS, students specialize by choosing a combination of subjects. The common tracks are:
