JAMB CBT Practice: How to Prepare for the Computer-Based Test

What is JAMB CBT?

Since 2013, JAMB has conducted its UTME as a Computer-Based Test (CBT). Instead of shading answer sheets with pencils, candidates answer questions on a computer. While this format has many advantages, it can be intimidating for students who aren't familiar with computers.

Understanding the CBT Interface

The JAMB CBT interface includes:

  • A question display area showing one question at a time
  • Four option buttons (A, B, C, D) to select your answer
  • Navigation buttons to move between questions
  • A timer showing remaining time
  • A question palette showing answered, unanswered, and flagged questions

How to Practice for CBT

1. Use CBT Practice Platforms

Platforms like Primacy Ebooks offer CBT practice tools that simulate the real JAMB environment. Practice regularly to build speed and confidence with the interface.

2. Improve Your Computer Skills

If you're not comfortable with computers, spend time:

  • Using a mouse/trackpad efficiently
  • Reading from a screen (it's different from paper)
  • Navigating between screens quickly

3. Practice Time Management

You have 120 minutes for approximately 180 questions (depending on your subjects). That's about 40 seconds per question. Practice answering under timed conditions to build speed.

CBT Day Tips

  1. Arrive early to avoid panic and get settled
  2. Listen to instructions from the invigilators carefully
  3. Start with your strongest subject to build confidence
  4. Don't waste time on difficult questions — flag them and return later
  5. Double-check before submitting — use the review feature
  6. Stay calm if you encounter technical issues — raise your hand for help

Common CBT Mistakes to Avoid

  • Accidentally clicking the wrong option (be careful with the mouse)
  • Not saving/confirming answers before moving on
  • Spending too long on the first few questions
  • Panicking when the timer gets low
  • Not using the "flag" feature to mark questions for review

Practice makes perfect. The more you familiarize yourself with the CBT format, the more confident you'll be on exam day. Start practicing today with Primacy Ebooks' CBT tools!
