How to Pass WAEC Mathematics: Tips and Strategies
The Mathematics Challenge
Every year, Mathematics records one of the highest failure rates in WAEC. Many students approach it with fear and dread. But Mathematics is a learnable skill — with the right approach, anyone can pass (and even score an A).
Understand the WAEC Mathematics Structure
WAEC Mathematics has two papers:
- Paper 1 (Objective): 50 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes
- Paper 2 (Theory): 13 questions (answer 10) in 2 hours 30 minutes. Section A (5 compulsory) and Section B (choose 5 from 8)
High-Frequency WAEC Mathematics Topics
Based on analysis of past papers, these topics appear almost every year:
- Algebra: Equations, inequalities, factorization (almost guaranteed)
- Mensuration: Area, volume, surface area of shapes
- Trigonometry: Sine, cosine, tangent, angles of elevation and depression
- Statistics: Mean, median, mode, standard deviation, probability
- Number and Numeration: Fractions, surds, indices, logarithms
- Geometry: Circle theorems, angles, constructions
- Sequences and Series: AP, GP, sum formulas
- Matrices and Determinants: 2×2 matrices, operations, inverses
- Sets: Venn diagrams, set operations
- Coordinate Geometry: Straight lines, gradients, midpoints
Strategies for Paper 1 (Objective)
- Work through questions systematically — don't jump around randomly
- Use elimination method for tough questions
- Don't spend more than 2 minutes on any single question
- If stuck, mark and move on — return later
- Check your shading carefully before submitting
Strategies for Paper 2 (Theory)
- Read ALL questions first and identify the easiest ones
- Show ALL working clearly — marks are awarded for method
- Start with Section A (compulsory) to secure those marks
- In Section B, choose questions from your strongest topics
- Draw diagrams where relevant — they earn marks and aid understanding
- Always state the formula before substituting values
Your Preparation Plan
- Get a comprehensive Mathematics textbook (like Primacy Ebooks SS1-SS3 Maths)
- Study topics systematically — don't skip any section
- Practice at least 20 past question papers
- Focus extra time on your weakest topics
- Time yourself during practice to build speed
You CAN pass WAEC Mathematics. It starts with believing in yourself and backing that belief with consistent preparation. Start today!
