Summary of Machine Motions (Linear)

Motion can be defined as the movement of a body (object) from one point to another with the application of force.

The five types of motion considered in this chapter are: Linear motion, Rotary motion, Oscillatory motion, Reciprocating motion and Irregular motion.

Linear motion is defined as the change in position in a straight line.

Uniform linear motion and non-uniform linear motion are the two types of linear motion.

Lever and linkages are the different types/parts of a mechanical system that exhibit linear motion.

The three classes of lever are first class lever, second class lever and third-class lever.

Rotary motion is motion of a body moving in a circular form.

Reciprocating motion also called reciprocation, is a repetitive up-and-down or back-and-forth linear motion.
