Materials are substances from which other things can be made.
Wood is the hard-fibrous material that forms the main substance of the trunk or branches of a tree or shrub, used for fuel or timber.
Wood is used in many different ways, some of which are carving and sculpture, as fuel, farm implements, building construction, furniture making, sport equipment, industrial packaging, tool making, medicinal use, vehicle body construction, pulp and paper, musical instruments, bridges and poles.
Examples and uses of hardwood and softwood have been discussed extensively in this chapter.

Metals are solid materials obtained from a natural product known as iron ore found in some places under the earth.
