SUMMARY OF LIVING AND NON-LIVING THINGS

Matter is any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume.

There are three states of matter, they are: Solid state, Liquid state and Gaseous state.

The particles of solids, liquids and gases possess different kinetic energies.

Examples of change of states of matter include melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, sublimation and deposition.

Properties of solids, liquids and gases have been fully discussed in this chapter.

Matter can be broadly classified into two, namely: Living things (matter) and Non-living things (matter).

Living things refer to those organisms which possess life and have the ability to eat, grow, respire, reproduce, obtain and use energy.

Non-living things are inanimate matter that do not possess life.

Characteristics of living and non-living things as well as differences between living things and non-living things have been treated in this chapter.
