Summary of Database
A database is a collection of data organized in a manner that allows access, retrieval and uses of data.
A Database Management System is a collection of computer software providing an interface between users and databases.
Features of Database Management System include: database logs – diaries; graphics component for producing graphs and charts; query optimizer, which performs query optimization on every query to choose the most efficient query plan; tools for database design, application programming and application program maintenance.
There are two main types of database which are Manual database and Computerized database.
Functions of database are elimination of data redundancy; elimination of data inconsistency; it is used to store and process large quantity of data; quick, efficient storage and or retrieval of data; good security of data; efficient update of data; and data integrity.
The four forms of database discussed here are Hierarchical database model; Network database model; Relational database model and Flat file database model.
