Output Devices and Their Functions
- Monitor: This is an output device that enables you to view data. It looks like a television set. It is also known as VDU (Visual Display Unit). It can be categorised into three, based on the technology used to make the monitors, these are:
- Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitor: This is an old model form of monitor. It is heavy, consumes high power and emits high radiation. This type of monitor is no longer popular because of its low resolution.
- Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) monitor: This type of monitor is light weight, occupies less space and consumes less power (usually flatscreen). It emits low radiation and supports high resolution.
- Light Emitting Diode (LED) monitor: This is a type of LCD monitor that uses light emitting diode for back lighting. Physically there is no difference between the LCD and the LED but the picture quality of the LED monitors is better than that of LCD.
