Methods of Preserving Farm Produce for Marketing
After harvesting farm produce, they are usually processed and preserved to keep them in a correct form for marketing. The various methods for preserving farm produce include:
- Drying: Most farm produce are more prone to spoilage when their moisture content is high except fruits and vegetables. So, the level of drying depends on the produce. Drying helps to protect the produce from bacteria and moulds. Also, dehydrating food makes it less attractive to moisture loving bacteria. Drying could be by electricity, heat from the sun or fire.
- Refrigeration / freezing: This is the act of preserving agricultural products, using refrigerators, freezers, refrigerated lorries and vans and cold rooms. The low temperature retards the growth of micro-organisms which cause spoilage of farm produce. Frozen products must be used quickly after defrosting. Freezing helps prevent food from spoiling before we’re ready to eat it.
