Functions of Lubricants in Gears

Lubrication is the process of applying grease or oil on sliding surfaces in contact.  A good lubricant must possess viscosity. Viscosity is the resistance to flow of a fluid. It shows how thick the lubricant is and its readiness to flow.

The main purpose of lubrication is to reduce friction and wearWhere friction is not wanted. This is done by separating solid surface out of effective contact with each other. In order to achieve this, a lubricant is introduced between the two surfaces.

Oil or grease which offers little resistance to motion is usually employed in a thin layer. This film of oil or grease separates the two surfaces. The film of oil reduces effective contact of the surface and reduces resistance to motion.
