Differences between Mitosis and Meiosis

Mitosis and meiosis are both cell division processes, but they have key differences:

  • Purpose: Mitosis is responsible for growth, repair, and maintenance of body cells, while meiosis is involved in the formation of sex cells (gametes) for reproduction.
  • Cell Division: Mitosis results in two identical daughter cells, each with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell. Meiosis, on the other hand, involves two rounds of cell division and results in four non-identical daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
