CHEMICAL ELEMENTS AND COMPOUNDS

Meaning of Element

Elements are substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by any chemical means. An element is a pure substance consisting only of atoms that all have the same number of protons in their nuclei. Everything in the world is built up from these elements.

By November 2016, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry had recognized a total of one hundred and eighteen (118) elements, and it is still the total number of elements as at 2023. The first 94 occur naturally on earth while the remaining 24 are synthetic elements produced in nuclear reactions. Four of these elements included in 2016 are Nihonium (113), Moskovi (115), Tennessine (117), and Oganesson (118).
