Causes of Digital Divide

The following are some factors responsible for the digital divide phenomenon:

  1. Low income: There are far more people in the developed countries who live in high income households than in developing countries. In developing countries like Nigeria, more than half of the population are low-income earners who fight for survival and see things like phones, computer, internet access etc. as luxuries.
  2. Low educational attainment: Developing countries are lagging behind their developed counterparts in the provision and acquisition of quality education for citizenry. This is a significant challenge because without formal education, combined with ICT skills, one may not be able to effectively use most ICT tools.
