Summary of Processing of Materials (Timber)

Timber can be defined as a part of a tree cut for the production of technological products like furniture, toys, roofing, etc.

Key concepts or terms in timber processing are the processes involved in timber processing and they include: Growth, Felling, Processing, Conversion and Seasoning.

Methods of converting timber are: Plain sawing method, Quarter sawing method and Rift sawing method.

The two methods of seasoning are: Natural or air seasoning and Artificial or kiln seasoning. Reasons for seasoning wood have been discussed in this chapter.

Moisture content is calculated as a percentage respective to the wetness or dryness of any wood. This chapter also treated the calculation of moisture content.

Properties or qualities of a good timber include strength, durability, uniform colour, elasticity among other things.
